Barham Salih joined the PUK in 1976 and was arrested on two separate occasions by Iraqi security agents before leaving Iraq in 1979 forGreat Britain. He received a Ph.D. in statistics and computer modeling from the University of Liverpool. In 1985, he became the PUK spokesman in Britain. He assumed a similar position in the United States in 1991 where he served for 10 years before returning to northern Iraq.
