In southern (Iraqi) Kurdistan, themiskenare landless, non-tribal peasants tied to the land and dependent on a landlord. Thus, the term also can be used simply to mean "poor," "submissive," or "servile." On the other hand, somemiskenare not necessarily poor and even hold plots of land so big that they have to employ helpers.
