HEVERKAN

The Heverkan are a large confederation of more than 20tribeswho formally belonged to theBotan emirateuntil it was taken over by theOttoman Empirein 1847. Struggles for the leadership then broke out.
The unity of the confederation collapsed with the murder of its paramount leader in 1919. Hajo eventually emerged as the new leader. In March 1926, Hajo seized police and frontier posts inTurkey, but the Turkish army then forced him to retreat intoSyria. There he became one of the main leaders of theKhoybun, which did much of the planning for theArarat revoltin 1927-1930. In current times the leadership of the Heverkan is not institutionalized, moving from one family to another.
