This is a Kurdish word that means "freedom" or "liberty." It has been used as the name of various Kurdish groups and journals. For example, it was the name of the organization associated with the uprising bySheikh Saidin 1925. ThisAzadiconsisted of mainly experienced military men and was headquartered in Erzurum in easternTurkey.

Azadiwas also the name of the journal of the Kurdish Section of theIraqi Communist Partyfor many years.
