As far back as the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848, artists have created clothing in deference to the prevailing fashion of the time. In the 1960s, when individualism and antiestablishment philosophies flourished, clothes that expressed an artistic flair became popular. Today, wearable art runs the gamut in clothing andaccessoriesfrom historically inspired, one-of-a-kind extreme designs crafted with labor-intensive hand treatments (such as embroidery, tooling, knitting, crocheting, hand dyeing, and weaving) to more mainstream artistic dress (such asstreet-inspired clothing and technology-inspired pieces).
