RUBOFF

Rub-off: translation

This is the act of extracting and copying the pattern of a particular garment or item. Some manufacturers will purchase a garment at retail and, using chalk and muslin, "rub-off the seams onto the muslin in order to steal the pattern of that garment. This process is much faster than trying to make the pattern from scratch. Manufacturers will often return the garment to the store for a refund after they have stolen the design/pattern.
