GERHARD, EDUARD

(1795–1867)

The Berlin-based, German art historian and philologist who specialized in the creation of early corpora of related material, including Etruscan mirrors. He was also one of the first scholars to examine systematically the context of Greek vases in Etruscan tombs, most particularly at Vulci. His intellectual approach was very much in the Johann Winckelmann tradition of aesthetics.
