Peters is one of a number of scholarsturned- shamans, such asMichael Harner, who have undertaken anthropological fieldwork with shamans and undergone experiences that led them to become shamans themselves and thereafter to teachneo-shamans. Peters is a professor of anthropology and psychology at the California Graduate Institute of Professional Psychology and Psychoanalysis in Los Angeles and a board member of the Society for the Anthropology of Consciousness. He has carried out fieldwork inNepal, China, Mongolia, andSiberiaand is self-termed a “TibetanShaman” using shamanic counseling and other psychotherapies “to promote psycho-spiritual integration” in his clients. Peters’s teaching methods andhealingpractices are firmly situated in the tradition of Harner’score shamanism, and indeed he is a research associate with theFoundation for Shamanic Studies.
