LA BARRE, R. WESTON

(1911–1996)

American anthropologist and ethnologist best known for his studies ofpeyotismamongNativeAmericans, particularly the Kiowa and theNative AmericanChurchin the 1930s and 1960s. La Barre also conducted research among the Aymara of Peru. The Smithsonian Institution has an extensive archive of his field notes and correspondence in all these areas.
