Music, rhythm, chant, song,drumming, and other instrumentalperformancesare significant aspects of much shamanic work and have been studied by this branch of musicology devoted to musics rooted in particular cultures, especially indigenous ones. Shamanic music has been considered in relation to a number of issues, especially its role in inducingtrance, ecstasy, andalteredstates of consciousness, as well as in the theorizing of performance.
