The theories of Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) became very influential in Scandinavian literature after WorldWarI.Hans Kirk, a DanishMarxist, depended heavily on Freud in his social analysis and, in particular, in his depiction of religion. The early work ofHans Christian Branneris strongly marked by the Freudian inspired psychologicalrealismof the interwar period. In Norway, bothOlav DuunandSigurd Hoelwere influenced by Freudian psychoanalysis, and Hoel particularly so in his portrayal of childhood in his novelVeien til verdens ende(1933; The Road to the End of the World).
