LEONORA CHRISTINA

(1621-1698)
A Danish writer, Leonora Christina was the daughter of King Christian IV and his second wife. She was married to a young noble named Corfitz Ulfeldt, who later acted treasonously toward the crown. For this reason, Leonora Christina was jailed from 1663 to 1685. She is remembered chiefly for a memoir she wrote mostly in the 1690s,Jammers Minde(published 1869; Memory of Woe; tr.Memoirs by Leonora Christina, Daughter ofChristian IV ofDenmark, 1929). She also wrote an autobiography in French (completed 1673).
