A Norwegian essayist,critic, and dramatist, Kjær published several collections of literary and other essays, among themEssaysFremmede Forfattere(1895; Essays on Foreign Writers),Bøger og Billeder(1898; Books and Images),Smaa Epistler(1908; Small Epistles),Nye Epistler(1912; New Epistles), andSvundne Somre(1920; Summers of the Past). His first play,Regnskabets Dag(1902; The Day of Reckoning), takes aim at moral and ethical relativism, whileDet lykkelige Valg(1913; The Happy Election) is a witty and satirical comedy in which a longtime member ofparlia-ment loses an election to his wife.
