ZIMMERMAN, HEINZ WERNER

From the late 1950s, he took an interest in the movement to renew Protestant church music in Germany; from 1963–1976, he was director of theBerliner Kirchenmusikschulein Spandau. Zimmerman has composedmotetsandchorale fantasiasfor unaccompanied chorus and a larger number of sacred works for chorus withinstruments. His style combines sacred idioms fromchoralesandspiritualswith secular elements, e.g.,Missa Profana(1977), a Latinmassfor five soloists, chorus, electronic sounds, sirens, Dixieland band, and orchestra.
