WILLAN, HEALEY

(12 October 1880, Balham, London – 16 February 1968, Toronto)
A composer who taught at Toronto Conservatory (1913–1937) and at the University of Toronto (1937–1950), he wasorganistand choirmaster at Anglican Church of St. Mary Magdalene (1921–death). His Anglo-Catholicism is reflected in his 14 {}Missae Breves(1928–1963), the11 LiturgicalMotets(1928–1937), and the EveningCanticles(chant-with-fauxbourdons, from 1928). He also wrote six communionservices, four fullmasses, other largescale sacred works (e.g., Te Deumin B-flat, 1935–1937), 34anthemsand 30hymn-anthems (e.g.,O Lord, Our Governour, performed at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, 1953), about 30 motets, over 30canticles, four sets of organ hymnpreludes, and other organ music, of whichIntroduction,Passacaglia,andFugue(1916) is particularly well known.
