Educated atLeipzig, he made his career ascantorat various churches in northwest German, from 12 August 1641 at the Johanneum in Hamburg. His own catalog comprises 281 works, about 250 sacred settings of Latin and German texts. His St. JohnPassion(1641, rev. 1643) is the first to useinstrumentalinterludes.
