A late and possibly the lastmass(after 1514 ?) ofJosquin Desprez, it is a superb example of theparaphrase masswhereby the borrowedhymnmelodyPange lingua gloriosiappears throughout the massordinariesin all four voices at different times in the new technique ofstructural imitation. Fifteen early 16th-century sources attest to its fame. A recent critical edition has been edited by Thomas Warburton for the University of North Carolina Press, 1977. The piece requires about one half hour to sing.
