Founder of the Reformed Protestant traditions, he restricted liturgical music tocongregationalsinging ofpsalmsand a fewcanticles. Thehymnalspublished under his supervision, from 1539 to 1562, includemonophonicsettings of vernacular,metrical psalmstranslated by himself, the great poet Clément Marot (c. 1497–1544) and Théodore de Beze (1519–1605). The most influential of these was the 1562Genevan Psalter.
