VITRY, PHILIPPE DE

French composer and poet, also bishop of Meaux. His contemporaryPetrarchknew and admired his French poetry, but he is best known as one of the leading figures of the new musical style known to contemporaries asars nova. He wrote four treatises on thears novastyle. His surviving compositions include a number of motets.
