SANTILLANA, IÑIGO LÓPEZ DE, MARQUIS OF

(1398-1458)
Castilian aristocrat, poet, and book-collector, often regarded as the crucial figure in introducing Renaissance learning into Spain, though he himself had only a limited command of Latin. His own poetry was written in Castilian, though it did employclassicalrhetorical devices and cite classical authors, most of whom the author probably read in Italian or Castilian translations. He was also a noted collector of man-uscripts, especially translations of the classics.
