PINTURICCHIO

Pinturicchio: translation

Popular name for Bernardino di Betto di Biago (ca. 1454-1513), a painter from Perugia who worked in the Umbrian style. Until the influence ofRaphaelbrought about a change in pop-ular taste, he was one of the most successful artists of his time. He was trained byPeruginoand joined his master inRomein 1481 to work on the frescoes of the new Sistine Chapel commissioned byPope Sixtus IV. He also worked for other patrons at Rome, includ-ing two other popes,Innocent VIIIandAlexander VI. For the lat-ter, he executed one of his most important commissions, the murals in the Borgia apartments in the Vatican Palace, including theDisputà di Santa Caterina(1492-1495).
