Palladio, Andrea: translation

(1508-1580)
Italian architect. His harmo-nious and balancedneoclassicalbuildings set a style for palaces, country houses, and churches that spread from his home region in northern Italy throughout Europe. The most famous example of his secular style is theVilla Rotondaat Vicenza (1567-1570). He also designed churches, of which the best known is San Giorgio Maggiore inVenice(1565). His buildings reflect his desire to applyRomanclassical forms to modern buildings and to revive the dignity and severity of Roman architecture. Palladio was strongly influenced by the architectural writings of the ancient architect Vitruvius and the Renaissance architectLeon Battista Alberti. In the last decade of his life he served as architectural adviser to the Venetian government.
HisQuattro libri dell'architettura/Four Books on Architecture(1570) was one of the most influential architectural treatises of the Renaissance, and his balanced classical style, as expressed in the Villa Rotonda, powerfully influenced the 17th-century English archi-tectInigo Jones.
