(1490-1541)
Flemish painter and designer of tapestries. Born in Brussels and trained by his father, he seems never to have visited Italy but nevertheless became familiar with the Italian Renaissance style of painting, changing from two-dimensional style to a Renaissance style influenced by the paintings ofAndrea MantegnaandRaphael. His designs for tapestries include aLife of Abrahamand a depiction ofMaximilian's Hunts, both of which illustrate his move toward more effective treatment ofperspective.
