Court painter to Margaret of Austria, who was governor of the Netherlands for her nephewCharles V. Mostaert was born and trained at Haarlem. Most of his work consists of portraits, religious paintings, and imaginary landscapes. One of his works represents an incident in the Spanish conquest and settlement in the New World, though the artist himself never left Europe and based his image on written descriptions.
