MASSYS, QUENTIN

(1466-1530)
Flemish painter. Born and trained atLouvain, he travelled to Italy to study the works of art about which he had heard and came back with increased skill in the technique ofperspectivebut otherwise did not fundamentally change the style of painting he had learned from his Flemish predecessors. He was highly regarded as a painter of portraits, and his twin portraits of the Dutch humanistErasmusand his friend Pieter Gillis (1517) are well known.
