HOBY, THOMAS

(1530-1566)
English diplomat. Educated at Cambridge and widely travelled on the Continent, he became known as a master of languages and a translator. In 1566 he becameElizabeth I'sambassador to France but died later that same year. His most famous translation wasBaldassare Castiglione'sBook of the Courtier, completed in 1552-1553 but not published until 1561.
