GOZZOLI, BENOZZO

(1420-1497)
Florentinepainter, trained byFra Angelico. His major work, theJourney of the Magi, executed about 1460 forPiero de'Medici, demonstrates full mastery of the sophisticatedperspectiveof matureQuattrocentoart, but the bright colors, multiplicity of human figures, and elegant courtly mood suggest the influence of the last great representative of the International Gothic painting in Italy,Gentile da Fabriano. The Journey of the Magidepicts a splendid aristocratic procession in which the artist portrayed not only his patron Piero but also Piero's father Cosimo and his sons Giuliano and Lorenzo; other figures from the Medici circle include Gozzoli himself,Fra Angelico,Pico della Mirandola, andAngelo Poliziano.
