Venetian painter of the late 15th century, especially influential because of his use of oil paint. Details of his life and career, and even the dating of his works, are debated. He seems to have studied atVeniceunderGiovanni Bellini. Three works now universally attributed to him areBoy with an Arrow,Three Philosophers in a Landscape, andThe Tempest; not quite so securely attributed is the sensuousSleeping Venus.
