Flemish painter, a disciple ofJan van Eyck, some of whose unfinished works he may have completed. His paintings demonstrate some of the earliest examples of the use of linearperspectivein northern art. HisPortrait of a Young Woman(ca. 1450) has the meticulous attention to detail typical of Flemish painting but also has a sensuous spirit and an inward-ness not common in his time and place.
