FRANKFORT, Henri: translation

(1897–1954)
Dutch-born archaeologist who emigrated to the United States in 1944. He undertook excavations at important sites in the Diyala valley for the Oriental Institute of Chicago in the 1920s and 1930s (see ESHNUNNA). In 1949 he became director of the Warburg Institute in London. He is best known for publications of religion and art history (Kingship and the Gods, 1948; Ancient Egyptian Religion: An Interpretation, 1948; The Art and Architecture of the Ancient Orient, 1954).
