FALKENSTEIN, ADAM

(1906–1966)

German Assyriologist. He was instrumental in defining the linguistic structure of Sumerian, having worked on a wide range of textual sources, from archaic texts of the Uruk period (Die archaischen Keilschrifttexte aus Uruk, 1936) to Early Dynastic royal inscriptions (Grammatik der Sprache Gudeas von Lagasch, 1949–1950) and incantations (Haupttypen der sumerischen Beschworung, 1931). He taught at the Universities of Gottingen (from 1940) and Heidelberg (from 1949).
