Nominated byPrime Minister Ehud Olmertand unanimously approved by thecabinetas justice minister on 6 February 2007 to replaceHaim Ramon. He became Israel's 7th justice minister since 2000. He served as dean of the law faculty atTel Aviv Universityand won the 1991Israel Prizefor achievement in the field of law. His efforts to reform aspects of Israel's judicial system, including limiting the Supreme Court's power of judicial review of legislation, placed him in conflict with the new Court president Dorit Beinisch.
