PALESTINE PARTITION PLAN

The plan adopted by theUnited NationsGeneral Assembly, Resolution 181 II, on 29 November 1947. Based on the majority recommendation of theUnited Nations Special Committee on Palestine(UNSCOP), it called for dividing thePalestine mandate(see BRITISH MANDATE FOR PALESTINE) into anArabstate and a Jewish state, an economic union linking the two states, and an internationalized sector (corpus separatum) includingJerusalem. It provided the basis for Israel's independence and the resultantArab-Israeli conflict.
