Since 1981, music director for life of theIsrael Philharmonic Orchestra(IPO). Mehta was born into anIndianParsi family in Bombay (now Mumbai), India. The IPO appointed him music advisor in 1969, music director in 1977, and music director for life in 1981. He is also honorary conductor of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.
