MAABAROT

(Transit Camps)
Temporary accommodations provided by Israel for mass immigration (seeALIYA) between 1950 and 1954 to facilitate absorption of new immigrants into the Israeli system. The conditions in the camps were problematic, and demonstrations and other difficulties resulted. More permanent housing was soon constructed, and a new system for immigrant absorption was devised and put into effect in 1954.
