GOREN, RABBI SHLOMO

(1917-94)
Born in Poland, he immigrated (seeALIYA) toPalestinein 1925. Shlomo Goren was educated at theHebrew University of Jerusalemand served as chief rabbi ofTel Aviv-Jaffa. He also served as chief chaplain of theIsrael Defense Forces(IDF) and asAshkenazichief rabbi of Israel. In theSix-Day War(1967), he celebrated with IDF soldiers the reunification ofJerusalemat theWestern Wall. In the 1970s and 1980s, he became increasingly associated with extreme factions of theWest Banksettler movement. In 1993, he created controversy when he ruled that it was permissible according to Jewish law (Halacha) for IDF soldiers to disobey orders to evacuate Jewishsettlements.
