Fedayeen: translation

Term meaning "those who sacrifice themselves" or "men of sacrifice." The term applied toPalestinianguerrilla units that were formed in Palestinian refugee camps following Israel'sWar of Independence(1948—49) and, withEgyptiantraining and logistical support, launchedterroristraids from bases in theGaza Stripinto Israel beginning in the summer of 1955.
