DINITZ, SIMHA

(1929-2003)
Born inTel Aviv, he was educated in theUnited States(University of Cincinnati and Georgetown University), where he received bachelors and masters degrees. He served as a political adviser to Prime MinisterGolda Meir, director general of Prime Minister Meir's office (1969-73), and ambassador to the United States (1973-78). Later, he served as vice president of theHebrew University of Jerusalemand then as anAlignmentmember of theKnesset. He later became chairman of theWorld Zionist OrganizationandJewish Agency, a position that he was compelled to relinquish in the context of charges of financial impropriety. His conviction on these charges was reversed on appeal to Israel'sSupreme Court. Dinitz died inJerusalem.
