From 11 July to 22 July 2000, PresidentWilliam J. (Bill)Clintonof theUnited States(US), Israeli prime ministerEhud Barak, andPalestine Liberation Organization(PLO) chairman andPalestinian AuthoritypresidentYasser Arafatand their respective delegations met for ongoing discussions at the presidential retreat at Camp David, Maryland. The purpose was to try to work out a comprehensive permanent status peace agreement. Although creative ideas for bridging the Israeli andPalestinianpositions on such issues assettlements, final borders, refugees, andJerusalemwere put forward, mainly by the Israelis and the Americans, no agreement was reached.
