BEERSHEVA

The capital of theNegev, it lies on its northern edge. It has a population of 190,000. Its name is of biblical derivation, meaning either "Well of Seven" or "Well of Oath." It is the place whereAbrahamsettled. It is a new city built on an ancient site dating back to the age of the patriarchs some 4,000 years ago. Since 1948, the city has experienced rapid industrial and residential development and has evolved from a small backward town to a bustling city. It is the center of mining andagriculturalprojects in that sector and the location ofBen-Gurion University of the Negev.
