WALLBURG, LARSOLE

Director. Wallburg is one of several directors born and reared in the former German Democratic Republic who established himself after the regime's collapse in 1989. He completed studies at Berlin's Free University and in 1992 withStefan Bachmannand other students founded the troupe called Theater Affekt. In 1996 Wallburg entered the German theatrical mainstream when theDeutsches SchauspielhausinHamburghired him as adramaturgand directorial assistant. His 1999 production there of Henrik Ibsen'sAn Enemy ofthe Peoplegained him his first invitation to the BerlinerTheatertreffen, which named him "emerging director" of that year. In 2003 Wallburg succeeded Bachmann as Theater Basel's principal director.
