RADDATZ, CARL

(1912-2004)
Actor. Raddatz was an outstanding actor of both theater and film who began his career in the late 1930s in his nativeBerlinwithHeinz Hilpert. He became a well-known movie star soon after his stage appearances, playing lead roles in several films produced by the UFA studio. In the postwar period, Rad-datz resumed working with Hilpert, appearing in the world premiere ofCarlZuckmayer'sBarbara Blombergin Göttingen and thereafter in several other Zuckmayer stagings. His work in the title role of Zuckmayer'sDerHauptmann von Köpenick(The Captain of Köpenick) at the Berlin Schiller Theater in 1968, in the opinion of many critics, surpassed the performance ofWerner Kraussas the original Captain. Raddatz's voice was an unusually supple instrument, both in musicals and in straight plays. As a voiceover specialist, he was regularly hired as the German-language voice of Robert Taylor, Humphrey Bogart, and later Lee Marvin.
