GLEICH, JOSEPH ALOIS

Playwright. Gleich is thought to have written more than 200 works for the stage, nearly all intended as fare forViennesepopular theaters. He was assistant director of the Theater in der Josephstadt from 1814 to 1816, but thereafter concentrated on playwriting while working full time as a court bureaucrat. Among his better known and popular works wereDie Musikanten am Hohen Markt(The Musicians on Market Day, 1816),Herr Dr. Kramperl(1820),Ydor, der Wanderer aus dem Wasserreiche(Ydor, the Traveler from Watery Realms, 1820), andDie weissen Hüte(The White Caps, 1822).
