SCACCIANOCE, LUIGI

(1914-1981)
Art director and production designer. Scaccianoce studied design at theCentro Sperimentale di Cinematografiaand worked with a number of minor directors before collaborating on Orson Welles'sOthello(1951). His meticulous attention to historical detail earned him aNastro d'Argentofor Best Production Design onMauro Bolognini'sSenilita(Careless, 1962), an award repeated two years later for his design ofFrancesco Maselli'sGli indifferenti(A Time of Indifference, 1964). He worked extensively withPier Paolo PasolinionIl Vangelo secondo Matteo(The Gospel According to St. Matthew, 1964),Uccellacci e uccellini(Hawks and Sparrows, 1966), andEdipo Re(Oedipus Rex, 1967), and collaborated closely with costume designerDanilo Donatito achieve the eerie and almost surreal atmosphere ofFederico Fellini'sSatyricon(1969). He subsequently worked withVittorio De Sicaon the latter's last two films,Una breve vacanza(A Brief Vacation, 1973) andII viaggio(The Voyage, 1974). Scaccianoce's last film wasLa cage aux folles II, directed in 1980 by Edouard Molinaro.
