Director, producer, and screenwriter. Luc Besson is best known for his contribution to thecinéma du look. His first feature,Le Dernier Combat(1983), is a science-fiction film. His three films that are often associated with thecinéma du lookSubway(1985),Le Grand Bleu(1988), andNikita(1990)—were nominated forCésar Awardsfor Best Film and Best Director. He later directed films in English using international actors.The Fifth Element(1997) won him a César for Best Director. His other English-language films includeLéon(1994) andThe Messenger:The Story of Joan of Arc(1999), which won the Lumière Award in 2000. His documentary,Atlantis, was released in 1991. He generally works with actorJean Reno. He cofounded Les Films du Loup with Pierre Jolivert.
