ICE WEDGE

ice wedge: translation

when temperature fall below -15蚓, ice in soil contracts. This causes cracks to open in the ground. These may fill with water which then freezes to form an ice wedge. During interglacials, or periods of retreat, the ice melts away and the crack may fill with solid material which stands out and may show the shape of the old ice wedges within the profile of the soil (fossilized ice wedge).
