Flemish: borne by a 6th-century saint, bishop of Arras-Cambrai. His name appears in medieval sources in theLatinizedformVedastus, and is of uncertain origin. It is probably a contracted form of the nameWidogast(orWidigast), which is also found in medieval documents; it is composed of theGermanicelementswiduwood +gastguest.
