Russian: fromGreekTheodotos, composed of the elementstheosGod +dotosgiven. This name, like the relatedTheodorosandTheodosius, was popular among earlyChristiansbecause of its auspicious sense, and was borne by several saints of the first century AD. The most famous (d. 304) was an innkeeper in Ancyra who was executed under Diocletian for having given Christian burial to the seven virgin martyrs Thecusa, Alexandra, Claudia, Phaina, Euphrasia, Matrona, and Julitta.
