Matthew, Saint: translation

Matthew is one of theEvangelistswho authored the Gospels and the patron saint ofbankersas he was a tax collector from Capernaum when Christ called him to become one of hisapostles. After Christ'sCrucifixion, Matthew went to Judea where he preached, and then to Ethiopia where he was martyred by sword for thwarting the king's attainment of the virgin Ephigenia. Matthew's story was masterfully illustrated byCaravaggioin theContarelli Chapel, Rome(1599-1600, 1602), including his calling by Christ, his writing of the Gospel while guided by an angel, and his martyrdom.Hendrick Terbrugghenalso painted theCalling of St.Matthewin 1621 (Utrecht, Centraal Museum) andNicolas Poussinrendered theLandscape with St.Matthewin 1640 (Berlin, Gemäldegalerie) where the angel dictates to the saint the word of God.
