Apoptotic cells show a regular pattern of oligonucleotide sizes on electrophoretic gels; the ladder-like arrangement is a consequence of the cleavage of the DNA strand between nucleosome beads by endonucleases as part of the process by which cell death occurs. See apoptosis.
